History of São Paulo

The history of São Paulo began in 1554, when twelve priests built a Jesuit college among Anhangabaú and Tamanduateí rivers. The goal was to catechize the Indians living in the region.

The name São Paulo was chosen in honor of the apostle Paul of Tarsus (also called "St. Paul") which was converted on January 25th, same day the school was founded.

In the following two centuries, the city of São Paulo remained a remote, poor and subsistent village. Being the least privileged of the Portuguese colonies in America, the city of São Paulo began with the haunt of Indians by the pioneers. Due to the discovery of gold in Minas Gerais and around SP, Vila de São Paulo was elevated to city status.

In the late seventeenth century, there was no more gold in the region - a fact which initiated the Paulista economic cycle of cane sugar. The independence of Brazil made the city look even more attractive, causing the growth and expansion of the site - remarkable at the time. Then, railways and roads were created to facilitate access to new province, which received a lot of immigrants and industries.

The industrial and residential expansion of the city were even faster during the period of the Old Republic (1889-1930). The city of São Paulo has undergone changes , including imports , expansion of trade, emergence of properties in São Paulo and urbanization in general, all this amidst the revolutions that have marked the history of Brazil.
